When Jerry G. Dawg lost a leg to terminal bone cancer, his workaholic humans sold nearly everything they owned and took him on the road trip of a lifetime. For two wanderlust-filled years, their âhandicappedâ navigator showed how to thrive against all odds. The result is Be More Dog, a book thatâs more than a memoir about a three-legged dog on an epic road trip. Itâs a mantra for all of us to live by.

Many people dream of a magic reset button. With one touch, it would instantly change their circumstances and create a more fulfilling life. What they donât realize is that life provides plenty of opportunities to switch direction, but few heed the signs showing the way.
For workaholic entrepreneurs Jim Nelson and Rene Agredano, their sign came when their heart and soul dog, Jerry, lost a leg to bone cancer. Vets said his time was running out, so they decided to make the most of it. They sold their home, their business, and nearly everything they owned. Then they bought a RV and made Jerry a promise: âStay with us long enough, and weâll take you on the road trip of a lifetime!â By the time they hit the road, Jerry had already outlived the grim prognosis.
Their travels took them from California through the Southwest, to the Atlantic coast, down to Florida and to the top of the Rocky Mountains. For two years Jerry led the way, showing the world that itâs better to hop on three legs than to limp on fourÂŽ. The trip breathed new life into Jerry, who generously shared important life lessons along the way. Once they opened their eyes to how he lived each day to the fullest, everything looked different. Their reset button was pressed.
The Be More Dog book is more than a memoir about a three-legged dog on an epic road trip. It is a mantra to live by, and this book is the guide. Itâs a heartwarming, sometimes bittersweet tale filled with deep meaning. Through his actions and attitude in the face of adversity, Jerry demonstrates how to persevere when things get tough, to never give up, and that every day is a great day, no matter what life throws your way.

Jim Nelson and Rene Agredano are a married couple who live, work and write from the road in their RV. Originally from the town of Eureka, California, their nomadic life began in 2007, when they sold their home, business and nearly everything they owned to travel with their terminally-ill dog, Jerry.
Given just a few months to live after his leg amputation, Jerryâs bone cancer diagnosis at age eight turned their lives upside down and around. But against all odds, he surprised everyone while defying the bleak prognosis and proving that he was living with cancer, not dying from it.
Jerry enjoyed two unforgettable years as the coupleâs co-pilot, traveling from coast-to-coast and back again. Wherever he went, his joyful nature inspired others to look beyond adversity, embrace the present and spread kindness to others. He earned his angel wings at age ten, on October 3, 2008.
During their two-year road trip with Jerry, Jim and Rene were featured in the documentary âNature: Why We Love cats and Dogsâ which first aired shortly after Jerryâs passing, on PBS in February, 2009.
In 2006, the trio created a WordPress blog called âTripawds.â Their therapeutic means of coping with Jerryâs amputation and cancer evolved into the worldâs largest support community for three legged pets and their people. In 2014 they formed the non-profit Tripawds Foundation to directly aid amputee dogs and cats.
Today, Jim is a writer for the pets, travel and Internet marketing fields, as well as a graphic designer, and WordPress guru with expertise in website development, e-commerce, and email marketing. Rene creates pet-centric metal jewelry, and is a freelance writer focusing on amputee animal advocacy, pets and travel. The couple continues advocating for the health needs of amputee pets, managing the Tripawds community and chronicling their travels at liveworkdream.com.
